Programme Aims and Overview

The ice2sea programme has obtained €10M in funding from the EU Framework 7 (FP7) for four years of research, 2009 – 2013. The 24 institutional partners in ice2sea are working together to quantify the contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise over the next 200 years.

We are doing this through an integrated programme that includes:

  • targeted studies of key processes in mountain glacier systems and ice caps (e.g. Svalbard, Patagonia), and in ice sheets in both polar regions (Greenland and Antarctica);
  • improved satellite determinations of changes in continental ice mass;
  • development and implementation of ice-sheet/glacier models to generate detailed projections of the contribution of continental ice to sea-level rise over the next 200 years.

We will deliver these results in forms accessible to scientists, policy-makers and the general public, which include clear presentations of the sources of uncertainty.
